Watch Affinity gets hands-on with the MAD Edition MAD1 Red, from the mind of MB&F Creative Director and founder Max Büsser! In the summer months of 2021, with no fanfare whatsoever, some crazy-looking watches started appearing across social media, which ultimately turned out to be the first watches under this new more accessible sister-brand: the MAD Edition MAD1 ‘Friends Edition’. These first watches were strictly only available to friends of Max and the MB&F brand who had supported their journey to date (after all, the “&F” in MB&F stands for “and friends”!), and no matter how nicely you asked for one, if your name wasn’t on Max’s list the answer was a polite “no”.And sure enough, at the start of 2022, a ballot was announced for anyone interested in purchasing the MAD Edition MAD1 Red (as opposed to the blue ‘Friends Edition’), which proved so popular that even after removing bots and duplicate entries, there were more than 50x as many ballot applicants than watches available, and it went on to win the Challenge Watch Prize in the 2022 GPHG Awards!Despite entering the ballot in 2022 (and again in 2023 for that matter), I haven’t yet been successful in my pursuit of the MAD1 Red, however thanks to a more fortunate friend of mine, I was finally able to spend some time with one recently and see what they’re like in the metal. My absolute favourite thing about this watch is that it is so very obviously born of the mind of Max Büsser.His MB&F creations are absolutely next level; whilst the MAD Edition watches are certainly not on par with MB&F, having been done on a relative shoestring budget in comparison (the MAD1 Red costs CHF 2,900 plus tax), in my opinion they certainly aren’t lacking in “MB&F factor” whatsoever in terms of the finished piece.

Hands-On: MB&F M.A.D. Editions M.A.D.1S Watch

The entire concept of the MAD1 was to create a watch whose face is a view of the spinning automatic rotor, while the time is indicated not on the dial, but rather through the sides of the case using two spinning drums. At a glance, the MAD1S simply looks like a thinner version of the MAD1. Numerically speaking, the difference in thickness is close to 19mm thick for the MAD1 and 15mm thick for the MAD1S. Both watches are 42mm wide and the water resistance rating for the MAD1S is 30 meters.MB&F didn’t just keep the M.A.D.1 the same and remove the minute ring. The MAD1S features a slightly reworked case and contains a new movement. The changes to the case have two purposes. First was a rework of the lugs to make the watch wear a bit more elegantly on smaller wrists.The M.A.D.1S watch contains the La Joux-Perret caliber G101 (the G100 without the date) that operates at 4Hz with 68 hours of power reserve. La Joux-Perret is owned by Japan’s Citizen Group, whose Miyota factory produced the movements for the M.A.D.1. The G100 is based on the Miyota 9000 series architecture but with some modifications and made in Switzerland.The nice news for MB&F and Citizen is that they both win here. MB&F gets to claim the MAD1S contains a Swiss movement, and Citizen still gets to sell movements to MB&F — a win/win in the watch industry if there ever was one.

Relatively new watch collector, really into dive watches and maximizing the value and build quality of what I buy.Raffle for me. I’m nowhere near MB&F money. But I’ll say, wearing it I really do feel like I’ve got high horology on my wrist. Keep looking out, rumor is they’re going to do another run of these this year, and the MAD2 will come out at some point too.I've seen complaints about the strap, but for me it's perfectly comfortable and looks good. The rotor jiggles with every movement of my wrist, and frequently goes into a crazy spin, both accidentally and on purpose. It's not the most practical watch, of course, but I can tell what time it is with enough accuracy to be fine for most days.About 177 cm. Close to 7 in. Mine was stuck in customs for a few days, then they wanted the watches and clocks worksheet filled out, which the MB&F guys helped me with, then I got charged the duty, then it moved.
